Evaluation Activity 2

Within the opening, very little is known about the character. We do not find out his name and why he is finding the 'Grove Devil'. The idea in the opening is for the audience to see the character but learn about him throughout the story. From the opening alone, we know he is investigating the 'Grove Devil'. It is hard to compare this character to someone as we don't know who he is as that is going to be outlined throughout the film.

As for the social group, we can see he is a teenage boy who appears to be a potential to the 'Gove Devil'. As he is out exploring on his own in the woods late at night, we understand that he is an adventurer and also an explorer as he is navigating unfamiliar woods by himself. The reason for not being able to compare this character with someone else is because in horror films, the protagonist is normally introduced and we can get an impression of the characters to see what his personality is like. For example whether he is; Lazy, smart, adventurous ext.

In this opening, I chose not to reveal this information as this information was going to be told throughout the film. This is not common in a horror film because the protagonist is typically introduced straight away. For this reason I am unable to compare my character to anyone else because he is not like anyone else. When I planned the storyline, I tried to see who my character related to but I couldn't find anyone that was similar to my character because I couldn't find any other protagonists that weren't introduced in the storyline.

We can assume from what he was doing and where he was going, he would be represented as brave and courageous as he still went and tried to track the 'Grove Devil' down despite him knowing how dangerous the task was and what had happened to previous victims. In terms of psychographics, this character would be an adventurer.

This in turn makes the character more unpredictable as he don't get any idea of his personality traits which means any plot twist or character twist couldn't easily be predicted as the character wouldn't give any indication of change. My research showed that having an unpredictable storyline in horror is one of the factors that makes a horror film scary as you don't know what is going to happen. This as a result leaves the audience uncertain as to whether he is a protagonist or antagonist. This for me is one of the factors that would make this film scary. Not being able to empathise with the character or know whether he is a protagonist or antagonist adds more tension as the plot is less predictable.
